This Privacy Policy explains how Honor Insurance Pty Ltd (ABN 26 702 573 206), trading as HONOR INSURANCE, collects, uses, stores and discloses your personal information. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Honor Insurance Pty Ltd provides insurance broking services as a Corporate Authorised Representative (CAR No. 001323598) of NeedCover Group Pty Ltd (ABN 28 005 729 831, AFSL 239911). Information shared with our licensee in the course of arranging your cover is also handled under NeedCover Group’s Privacy Policy.
1. Information we collect
We only collect personal information that is reasonably necessary to provide insurance broking services to you. The kinds of information we collect include:
Identity details: your full name, date of birth, residential and postal address, occupation and, where required, identity document details;
Contact details: phone numbers, email addresses and preferred language;
Insurance details: the assets, liabilities, business activities and circumstances you want covered, your prior claims and insurance history, and any cancellations or refusals of cover;
Sensitive information: only where it is necessary to arrange the cover you have asked for (for example, limited health information for travel or personal accident insurance, or criminal history for certain commercial covers). We will ask for your consent before we collect sensitive information;
Financial information: bank account or card details for the payment of premiums, and credit information where premium funding is involved;
Technical information: IP address, device and browser information, and analytics events when you use this website.
Where it is lawful and practicable, you can deal with us anonymously or under a pseudonym (for example, when making a general enquiry). To arrange or alter a policy, lodge a claim, or accept a quotation, we will need to identify you.
2. How we collect your information
We collect personal information directly from you whenever we can, including through phone calls, emails, meetings, completed proposal forms and this website. In some cases we will collect your information from third parties, including:
Insurers, underwriting agencies and reinsurers we approach on your behalf;
Claims investigators, loss adjusters, assessors and repairers;
Premium funders and payment processors;
Your authorised representatives, advisers, brokers, accountants or family members;
Publicly available sources, government registers and credit reporting bodies (where you have authorised a credit check).
3. How we use your information
We use your personal information to provide insurance broking and related services, including to:
Identify you and assess your insurance needs;
Obtain quotations, place, vary, renew or cancel policies on your behalf;
Lodge, manage and advocate for your claims;
Arrange premium funding and process payments and refunds;
Comply with our legal, regulatory and licensing obligations, and assist our AFSL holder with theirs;
Keep our records accurate, secure and up to date;
Improve our website and services, including through aggregated analytics;
Contact you with information that is directly related to the cover you hold or have enquired about.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for purposes you would not reasonably expect.
4. Disclosing your information
To do our job we need to share your personal information with others. The types of organisations we typically disclose information to include:
Insurers, underwriting agencies and reinsurers (in Australia and overseas) we approach for quotations or who issue your policy;
NeedCover Group Pty Ltd, our AFSL holder, in connection with the financial services we provide as its authorised representative;
Premium funders and payment processors who collect or finance your premiums;
Claims handlers, loss adjusters, investigators, assessors, repairers and medical or other experts engaged on a claim;
Lawyers, accountants and other professional advisers acting for you or for us;
Government bodies, regulators and dispute resolution schemes (including ASIC, AUSTRAC, the OAIC and AFCA) where we are required or permitted to disclose information;
IT service providers who host or support our systems under written confidentiality and security obligations.
5. If you do not provide your information
How much you tell us is your choice, but the less we hold, the less we can do. If you do not provide the information we ask for, we may not be able to obtain quotations, place or vary cover, arrange premium funding, manage your claim, or act as your broker at all.
Insurance law also places disclosure duties on you. For most personal policies you must take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to the insurer. For other policies you must tell the insurer everything you know, or could reasonably be expected to know, that is relevant to its decision to insure you. If the information given is wrong or incomplete, an insurer may reduce or refuse a claim, or cancel or avoid the policy. Please tell us promptly if anything you have given us changes.
6. Sensitive information
Some insurance products require sensitive information, for example health information for travel, life or personal accident covers, or criminal history declarations for certain commercial covers. We will only collect sensitive information with your consent and only use or disclose it for the purpose for which it was collected (or a directly related purpose you would reasonably expect), unless the law otherwise permits.
7. Overseas disclosure
Some insurers, underwriters, reinsurers and service providers we deal with operate overseas, including through the Lloyd’s of London market in the United Kingdom. Other locations may depend on the providers involved in your insurance arrangements. Where required by law, we take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle personal information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles, or obtain consent where appropriate.
8. Direct marketing
From time to time we may contact you about a renewal, a cover that relates to what you already hold, or a change in the insurance market that affects you. We keep this to a minimum, and it is always connected to the services we provide you.
You can opt out at any time by replying to any message you receive from us, emailing Hello@honorinsurance.com.au, or telling your broker, and we will action it promptly. We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not hand it to third parties for their own marketing.
9. Storing and securing your information
We hold your information in electronic systems and, where applicable, paper records. We take reasonable steps to protect it against misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Depending on the systems used, these measures may include:
Restricted, role-based access to client records;
Encryption of data in transit and at rest where practicable;
Confidentiality obligations on staff and authorised representatives;
Regular review of our IT, physical and procedural controls.
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide our services and comply with applicable legal, regulatory and record-keeping obligations. Retention periods vary depending on the information and relevant requirements. When information is no longer required and we are not legally required to keep it, we take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it.
10. Cookies and analytics
Our website may use cookies and similar technologies to support site functionality, security and understand website usage. The specific cookies and analytics tools used will depend on the website configuration. You can disable cookies in your browser, although some functions may not work as expected. For questions about cookies or analytics, please email Hello@honorinsurance.com.au.
11. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles, you can:
Ask for access to the personal information we hold about you;
Ask us to correct information you believe is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date;
Ask us to stop sending you direct marketing;
Make a complaint about how we have handled your information.
There is no charge for making a request. We will use our best efforts to respond to access and correction requests within 30 days; complex requests may take longer and we will keep you informed if so. In limited circumstances we may decline a request, for example if access would unreasonably affect another person’s privacy or breach a legal obligation. Where we decline, we will tell you why in writing.
12. Making a complaint
If you believe we have breached your privacy, please tell us first so we can try to resolve it. Write to our Privacy Officer at Hello@honorinsurance.com.au using the contact details below. We will acknowledge your complaint promptly and aim to respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response to a privacy complaint, you can refer the matter, at no cost to you, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992. Complaints about the financial services we provide as an authorised representative (rather than about privacy specifically) are handled under the internal dispute resolution process of our licensee, NeedCover Group Pty Ltd, and, if unresolved, can be referred at no cost to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) at afca.org.au or on 1800 931 678.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practice, technology or the law. The current version is always available on this website, and the “Last updated” date at the top of the policy will tell you when it was most recently revised.
